Social media, referrals, and friends should be worldwide

When you start expanding your online presence, either with Facebook, online directories, blogs, or any other social media don’t just do local ones. Having friends and links to websites in other cities, provinces/states and other countries.

You maybe asking why would this be important since you are a localized company. Well Luv-A-Rug just had a phone call from a lady here in Victoria BC and she found us through a company in England. She has these amazing bags that she bought in the 1970’s here in Victoria and they became victims of moths a year ago.

I am hoping that once we see the bags that we can repair them or at least stabilize them and then clean them. It is sad to hear when beloved items are eaten by moths. This lady was gone one month and that is all it took for moth larva to do a lot of damage.

Now if we had not made connections to other companies she may never have found us, even though we are in the same city. Expand your network so that you can be found no matter where what your business is. I have received e-mails and inquiries from people all over the world asking for my expertise about area rugs. From the Netherlands I had a guy asking me about a rug his parents were given. He wanted to know if it was worth keeping or if they should sell it. It was a Chinese hand-knotted rug with dragons on it.

Just because you don’t live or do business everywhere doesn’t mean that you cannot still be the expert/specialist that everyone turns to for advice.

Where is the furthest that someone contacted you for your expertise? Share your story in the comments.

>Even more shag area rugs

>Shag rugs are all the rage and can be found in every shape, fiber type, fiber length, and colour. They add a punch of colour and texture to any room at affordable prices. Shag rugs are also one of the most difficult types of area rugs to clean.

Shag rugs are the Divas of the area rug world and need extra attention and care to keep them looking their best. I know I keep writing about Shag rugs, but not everyone has gotten the message that Shag rugs need to be cleaned and vacuumed more often that a short pile rug. Here is another video showing a good way to vacuum a Shag rug.

The fibers of a Shag act just like velcro and dirt and debris easily get trapped in them. Shaking the rug helps, but it is best to do when the rug is upside down that way the dirt goes onto the floor more so than in the air. If you have any furniture on your Shag move the rug every few weeks to see how dirty it is getting. It doesn’t take too long before your nice off white Shag to become grey from being walked on.

If you have pets it is a good idea to check under the rug to see if they are using it as a bathroom. When you have a coloured shag there may not be any evidence of urine on the front of your rug, but the back of the Shag will show any stains. Pets love shags too, but not always the same way you do.

>Can you afford to throw away your rug?

>

Do-It-Yourself cleaning can lead to a new rug
It seems easy enough to wash your small rugs yourself, but done wrong it can cost you. This little 2×4 cotton tufted rug became a casualty of a quick DIY cleaning. The red, pink and blues ran into the yellow areas, and the soft texture of the cotton became very crunchy when it dried.

The best way to clean a cotton tufted rug s to use a damp white cotton towel, after you have tested to see if the colours are stable. To test to see if colours are stable take a damp white cotton towel and gently rub each colour separately. If you get any colour transfer on the towel it is not advisable to wet the rug.

A lot of things can wrong when you attempt to clean some rugs yourself. You may be trying to save money on cleaning, but if you cause permanent damage to your rug it will cost you more to replace it. Always take caution before you grab the hose and clean your rug.

If you are in doubt about if your rug is worth cleaning bring it in to Luv-A-Rug, we will be honest and let you know if your rug is worth cleaning.

>Shag Area Rugs…….Good or Bad?

>At Luv-A-Rug we see many shags come in for cleaning every week most of them have become the dogs or cats litter box. To little Fido a shag rug looks and acts just like outside so why not use it. That is not why you bought the shag rug, you bought it because it may have invoke a sentimental childhood response, plus they look really good in the store display.

Shag rugs don’t have to be a temporary if they are used in the right areas in your home. Shag rugs are perfect for a bedroom on in an area that isn’t walked on a lot. The more a shag is walked on the quicker it can wear out and become unlovable.  Just like any other kind of rug they make good shags and bad shags. The quality of a shag can depend on the way it is constructed, either glued, woven, or sewn together. It can also depend on the manufacturer and their quality standards.

When thinking of purchasing a Shag rug think about where you will put it in your house and how much use it will get. Also give the fibers a little tub or rub your hand in a circle over them to make sure it isn’t going to shed easily.
This Shag rug is one of the newest fiber textures. It is felted wool and the fibers are almost two inches long and half inch think. These rugs are beautiful to look at and so cushy to walk on.

These kinds of shags do not stand up well in high traffic areas. Keep in mind that the fibers mushroom out after being walked on for awhile and this cannot be fixed.

Shag area rugs are the high maintenance area rugs. You need to vacuum them and get them professionally cleaned more often than regular area rugs. Vacuuming can be bothersome, but by turning the rug upside down and vacuuming the back first and then using the upholstery brush on the top fibers you will remove a lot more of the loose dirt, plus you may find a few lost treasures too.

Shag rugs are an easy way to give any room a burst of colour and texture, just keep in mind that they require more attention and care when it comes to keeping them looking their best.

>Area rugs and Lantern oil- It is fixable

>

Not many of us own the old style oil lanterns. Lanterns were our backup light source when the power went out when I as growing up. I had one in my room that attached to the wall.

Here is a picture of one that I hi-jacked from the Internet courtesy of http://www.easychinasupply.com (not an endorsement). I remember having to trim the wick and the awful smell of the lantern oil and how I was to never play with it, which I never did Mom, yeah sure.

These lanterns are still used today and one meet an area rug a few months ago. A couple moved from Alberta Canada to Victoria, BC, Canada and just before the move a lantern fell on the rug.

The rug is a custom-made rug. The middle embossing was a replica of the couples coffee table edging. Great detail work by the Calgary company who made the rug. The backing came unglued when the lantern oil meet it causing the rug to ripple front and back.

Now when you first look at this rug you may think why even bother. It is too far gone to make it usable again. We picked up the rug and brought it to our shop to have our repair tech look at it. He knew he could reattached the backing, but he wasn’t sure as to how the top would even out. It isn’t easy to know until you open up the back and see what exactly the lantern did.

As it turned out the front flatten out to make the rug usable and lovable again. The back isn’t pretty looking, but it is a small thing compared to having to replace the whole rug.

If this rug could not have been fixed another option could have been to trim down the rug. We could have made it square or into a circle. Not all is lost when an accident happens to your rug, it just can seem that way.

If your rug should ever have a bad accident happen bring it to Luv-A-Rug, we will assess your options. We are located at 445 Beta St (off Alpha St) Victoria, BC 250-590-6210/1800-886-2802

>Rug luvable again

>When it comes to old, worn out, or stained fringes you have a couple of options for remedying them. Depending on the factors of the type of rug, where you use the rug, and budget we have fix that will suit you and your area rug.
First off we can replace the fringes with a machine sewn fringe. The old fringes are cut off and a synthetic ribbon is sewn on to the edge of the rug. The new fringes are then sewn on to the top of the rug. Luv-A-Rug cleaners in Victoria has different fringes to choose from in three different colours, white, golden, grey. We like to choose a colour of fringe that best compliments the area rug. We can also hand weave new fringes as mentioned in a previous blog.

When you are tired of the vacuum having lunch with the fringes, or if the fringes get too dingy we can remove them completely. A serged or overcast stitched edge adds a nice clean look to your rug. We use synthetic fiber for serging as it lasts longer than say cotton or wool and is less expensive and more readily available. We match the best colour to your rug so that it blends with the rug. Serging is a great option for most area rugs.
For flat woven rugs or thin rugs we recommend binding. Binding is a 1/4 inch synthetic ribbon that is sewn on the edge of your rug. Binding is also best for left over carpet pieces. Old dingy worn fringes can make you rug look old and not very lovable. Let Luv-A-Rug cleaners add the love back into your rug with new fringes or a nice clean edge. 250-475-3922 www.luvarug.com

Today is the fifth of November and it is evident that people are thinking about getting ready for…………brace yourselves…………..the holiday season, yikes! Luv-A-Rug has seen the beginnings of the holiday area rug cleaning season, that is a mouthful to say. I could be wrong about the pre-rug cleaning spurt we are having right now, but it is that time to start thinking about it.
We offer free Saturday pick up and delivery and we are booking up fast. Right now we are now booking for Nov. 22, so if you want to have us pick up your rug(s) please call soon. Just think if you get your area rugs cleaned now it will be one less thing to worry about when the crunch is on.
I wish we could make temporary clones of ourselves that would last about 24 hours or so, just imagine what we could get done. I know that in a few weeks I will be feeling very overwhelmed and really wanting that clone. Okay this is a short blog today because it is all I can fit in. I hope that everyone who celebrates Halloween had a safe and good time, mine was okay, it had its moments of good and bad, but I am remembering the good because I choose to.
I didn’t want to mention the historical event that happened in the USA last night, but I would like to say that I am happy about the results.
